Tim - Science experiment and England talk

Tim came into our classroom and talked about science.  We even did a science experiment with him.
To begin with we had to put our hands into some jelly stuff on a petrie dish.  Then we closed the lid and closed them up. We put our names on the bottom so we could tell which was which.
Some people washed their hands and repeated the experiment to see if there was a difference. Four people also used hand sanitiser after they washed their hands to see if it killed the bacteria.
One person didn’t wash their hand, but used sanitiser on its own.
Tim put the petrie dishes into a black bag and put them into his hot water cupboard at his house.  A few weeks after, he came back with the results.  They were pretty yucky.  They had mould all over the petrie dishes.  Everyone went, “Ewww”and “yuck”.
The results showed that handwashing is very important. If you use hand sanitiser after washing your hands it kills most of the bacteria.
Using sanitiser on its own wasn’t very good.

Once he had finished he talked about England and that was pretty interesting. He told us about what he did in England.  Tim is Alex, Cormac, Lucy and Campbell’s dad.

Veronica - Chile

Veronica is Coni’s Mum and she is from Chile. Chile has 16,746,491 people living there. Chile is part of South America. Veronica comes from the middle of Chile.

70% of people in Chile are Catholic.

A popular dish is to eat is empanadas (it is a dish with mince and boiled eggs).

National Day is a very important day in Chile.

On all Saints Day people go to the cemetery to remember their loved ones who have died. There are lots of markets outside too. They also go to Mass.

In Chile, children only stay at family’s houses. They don’t sleep over at friend’s houses.

Bharathan - Sri Lanka and South Africa

On Wednesday Bharathan came to talk to us about Sri Lanka and South Africa. It was awesome.

In Sri Lanka he spoke Tamil. He didn’t celebrate Christmas because they belonged to the Hindu religion.

Bharathan moved to South Africa when he was twelve. He and his brother went to an “All white school”. Bharathan found that very strange because he and his brother were the only dark skinned students.

In Sri Lanka and South Africa, they don’t have friends sleeping over at their houses for birthdays. They only stay at close relative’s houses.

We asked lots of questions about the animals. Bharathan is a doctor and told us lots about medicine and how he would like to see us train in medicine too.

Father Job - India

Father Job came to our class to talk about India.  In his home region, Kerala they had a festival called Onam.  At Onam people put down a big banana leaf and put some curries and rice on it.  For dessert they had Payasam.   They also sprinkle flowers everywhere.  They made decorations using flowers and put them everywhere.  People buy new clothes - women wear cream coloured saris.

Even though Onam is a Hindu festival, everyone in the Kerala region celebrates. It is a week long celebration.

Silvia - Spain

Silvia came into Room 4 and talked to us about Spain.  She told us about the running of the bulls and she showed us the Spanish flag.   She told us about the tomato throwing festival and the story about how she got to New Zealand from Spain.

Silvia is Siana’s Mum and they came to live in New Zealand from Barcelona when Siana was four.

Celebrations around the World

Room 4 have had lots of visitors in to talk to us about celebrations. We have asked them questions about their birthday and Christmas and found out about lots of different festivals that we didn't even know about.

It has been great asking people questions and hearing their stories. :)

Wonder Blue by Maddie W

Blue is the sky with birds flying around,

It is the deep blue sea and

The bubbling fish tank.

Blue is the splosh and the splash in the bath,

The water running down the pipe and

The birds in the sky.

Blue is getting into a cold bath after netball,

It feels like you’re being splashed on a ride.

And you have just dived into the deepest end of the pool.

Blue will take you on an adventure!

Creative story by Ashlei

Just two days ago Mr. Johnson was caught on tape opening a treasure chest. He searched through it for about ten minutes and BAM! He pulled out a touch screen cellphone and he turned it on. Then he called the school to say he needed a reliever.

Mr. Johnson was the richest man in the world so about one year ago he bought a secret helicopter. On this day he called his pilot to come from the jungle. When he picked him up from the jungle the emergency alarm started going off and they crashed into a cliff and had to go to hospital. Mr. Johnson was in a coma but he suddenly woke up and he asked the nurse to make him a hot Milo. He looked out the window and saw a fish in the sea and he turned around and fell back asleep. Then he stopped breathing and the nurse had to pull his plug. Then he died.

On the 1st of July a group of Maori people lived on a far away farm called coromandel. One bright sunny day Miranda and fluffy her brown dog saw dinosaur shadows, while they were sitting on their couches outside.

Ring went Miranda’s phone. It was from George the robot telling her he had bought hotdogs and slingshots for the ball on Thursday 3 July. When Miranda was on the phone the dinosaurs ate up fluffy her brown dog and skeleton bones were left.

Miranda was so unhappy that she did not celebrate the ball as she wished it would be. She did not want another pet because she really liked fluffy dog. Even though her dog passed away she was so nervous about flying a helicopter to another Maori village in the North Island with her family. Her mother Sandra, father Bob, Susan sister and her brother Geoffrey were all going …dri dri went the helicopter.

Lily's Poem

Mickey’s poem.
Mickey has a panda-like look,

Because it’s black and white,
His fur falls out like a panda,
Because it’s very short,

Finally his fur’s incredibly straight,
But we love him!

Red poem by Maddy F

Blood racing down your face.

Hearts beating all the time.

Mr Gander’s red sports car racing.

Love happening all the time.

People screaming really loud.

Paper rustling as loud as the wind.

Tomato sauce on chips.

A hot dog with sauce.

Chocolate raspberry sauce.

Red spray paint, spraying the walls.

Red paper on the wall.

Red rose petals on the ground.

Red will make you have fun.

Jessica's Haiku

Green grass bright and bold

 Spreading across the globe.

 Mud all around it.

 By Jessica.

Black by Faith

The darkness of a jacket

When it’s dark at night

The color of cats’ eyes

Bats flapping their wings at night

A witch laughing at midnight

Cats fighting while everyone is in bed

A mud cake going down your throat

The tip of a pen on your tongue

A black grape going down your throat

A warm sweater on your skin

A really cold leaf touching you

It makes you feel like you’re in the darkest cave.

Year 5 Camp by Hayley

“Are we there yet?” I asked Mum.

Today I was going to year 5 camp and I was in the car with Madeleine and Brook and we were on our way to the Moeraki Boulders. When we got there we found out that we needed to go over a stream to get there so, we had to park somewhere else.

When we finally found the Boulders we started to climb them. Soon it was time to leave to go to the gardens.

When we got to the gardens it was time for lunch but half way through lunch it started to rain so we had to go in the information centre. Sadly the scavenger hunt was cancelled but we still fed the ducks. Then it was time to go.

“Wow,” I said as I looked at Baldwin Street. “Do we have to climb that?” I asked but we started to climb anyway. “Huff, puff,” I said at the top but we still had to go down! When we finally got down we got a chocolate.

Soon it was time to go to Museum. When we got there we meet a lady that was going to take us for lesson named Heather and went to put our bags in the discovery pad. Next we had afternoon tea. For afternoon tea we had two biscuits and some pieces of fruit.

Soon it was time for our lesson. Our lesson was about weapons that the Maori used. After our lesson we had free time in the discovery room. The discovery room is a room that has lots of toys in it.

Then it was time for our next lesson. This lesson was about myths we had to write about how something became. My group write about how the boulders became.

Next we got more free time in the discovery room. One of my favourite games was a relaxing competition and I really liked it.

Then it was time for tea. For tea we had pizza and bread.

After tea it was time for another lesson. This lesson was about the animals in the animal attic.

After that it was time for bed. We had to set up our beds in the discovery room because we were sleeping in there.

In the morning we went to the pool. At the pool there was a lazy river and a wave pool.

Soon it was time for lunch. For lunch we had a bread roll .After lunch it was time to go back to Timaru.

We hopped in the car and said bye to Dunedin!

White poem - by Amber

White

A brand new T-shirt,

A clear poster on the wall,

A cup of fresh milk,

A computer turning on,

Some teeth chattering in the cold,

A headband snapping,

Minty mints from the market,

Soft toasty bread,

Melting chocolate in your cart,

A pair of soft wings from heaven,

A new born baby,

And a heavenly room,
White can make your dreams come true.

They are as golden as a gold pencil,

They are as precious as a crystal

Gold is as special as my Mum

Blue by Gemyn

Blue

A new book cover about to be ripped

A new pencil about to be used

Your writing about to be scribbled on

Someone jumping into the pool

Waves hitting the rocks at the beach

Blue guitar strings humming

Icing on a cake

A plastic pencil case being eaten

Blue paper being munched on

Water being splashed in your face

Slime being rubbed in your face

Ice cream on your face

Blue is a wet ride

Simile Poem By Amber

She helps me in hard times.

A.N.Z.A.C Day Poem by James

A.N.Z.A.C

The guns are as heavy as tables,

Men are as tough as steel,

Cannons firing like they were slaves,

Not letting go of their prey.

The poppies are as red as blood.

On A.N.Z.A.C day.

Orange Poem by Nomhle

Orange is a colour

Orange is as sweet as love

Orange juice going down my throat

Penny’s orange folder lying around

The orange fire in the fireplace

Orange autumn leaves around the school yard

Orange logs burning in the fire

The tasty oranges make me tasteless like the sea water

Orange carrot cakes making me feel mouth-watering

The orange srumssies biscuit

The orange bed I sleep in winter

Orange tea I drink before I get a cold on the couch

The orange cat on my lap

Orange can take you to an orange juice adventure.

Breaking News by Amber

Last night a girl was a attacked by a wolf, trying to steal her goodies.  He ate Granny Pucket and Little Red Riding Hood but then the little girl’s dad saved the day and found them both in the wolf’s tummy.

The wolf ran away before the man could get him to a nearby hospital, and is now on the loose.  So stay indoors and do NOT let him in your house.  If you see him call officer Bob on 03921058.  This is what he looks like.

Breaking News by Katie

I’ve just heard that two little pigs have been murdered at their houses last night on big bad wolf haunted street.

Police have caught footage on their spy cameras, are now looking for more evidence.

The wolf was caught traveling to England on the night of the incidence.

The 3rd pig said that the wolf was hungry for some little pigs.

We will get to the bottom of it.

Book Character Day by Nomhle

On book character day I had nothing to wear so decided to put on my tights to wear to school. When I got to school I saw others looking like book characters and I felt like crying.

The characters were Alice in wonderland (Penny) Miss Field as the cow Mrs Moynihan as old McDonald had a farm. We took photos and had a parade with our buddies. Miss Galbraith was dressed as Dora the Explorer and had Boots the monkey.

That day everyone was dressed lovely. I liked it how everyone was different characters and there were different kinds of clothing. Everyone, even the teachers looked awesome.

What I liked about book character day was when Constanza acted like Little
Red Riding Hood and the big bad wolf.

Blown Out by Hayley

Yesterday at 3pm a wolf blew down the houses of three innocent little pigs.

The wolf insisted he was coming to get a cup of sugar and sneezed on the houses. He said he was innocent. But we believe he was coming to have some pig dinner and blew down the houses.

The third little pig has something to say “A wolf ate my brothers.”The wolf is now in jail but watch out he could escape.

Hero Battle by James

“Ho, ho, ho,” Santa said, “We need to secure the presents.” “Yes, yes sir, yes sir,” said the snow men.

Well on the other side of the snow roofed land, what’s that, look out lolly artillery, that’s a close one. “Santa must admit defeat, if he does not we will be beaten. Prepare my men we cannot let Santa eat my lollies,” Easter bunny said. “Charge,” said Commander-in-chief. Sometime later. . .

“Santa look at this.” “O.K,” said Santa and Commander elf, the battle of good and good. Santa is winning, he is going to use Candy Cane Missiles “Fire,” said Santa, whoo, whoo, boom, boom. At the Easter fortress The Mighty bunny admit defeated. Santa has won. So that is why we get presents at Christmas.

Year Six Camp - Rakaia Gorge Walkway

On the first day when I heard we were going for this long walk up a farmer’s hill. I was looking forward to going there but a little frightened of the water. I was a little bit scared because Nathan told us that the Rakaia Gorge River was thirty cubic metres across. I imagined what would happen if someone fell and went straight in the water and got hurt.
When we started our walk up the hill we saw jet boats, golfers and cows. We had to carry our bags on our backs. They were really heavy because they had our food and warm clothes. We also saw other people going up and down the hill following the orange triangles. We had our lunch up the hill and the weather was cloudy. We din’ t continue our walk because it was raining. We were supposed to go for a swim at Mt Somers but because of the weather we didn’t go.

My favourite part was when I saw jet boats and cows on a far away land and having some lollies on our way up and down the hill.
